ABOUT US

In 1945, Arthur Phalen and his wife Pat, along with sister-in-law Mary Jane Moline established Western Ceramics on Sacramento Street in San Francisco. In 1949 the business was moved to Howard Street, and after a short separation between the Phalens and Ms. Moline, Western Ceramic Supply Co. was re-established in 1960.

Around the same time, at the age of only 16, Edward Sherry founded Sherry's Ceramic Supply in 1961 in the basement of his mother, Bette Sherry's home.

In September of 1980, Ed Sherry purchased Western Ceramics from the Phalens, moving it to its current location at 948 Washington Street in San Carlos CA. Ed Sherry's love of ceramics made the business flourish. Inventing new glaze colors and surfaces, Ed became a true glaze alchemist, and developed the full line of glazes we carry today.

In the summer of 2006, Ed Sherry began negotiations with his largest distributor of glaze, Clay Planet, on taking over the business so that he could continue to persue his other great passions in life, travel, and theater. In late 2007 Ed Sherry passed away. His legacy will always be with Western Ceramics, its employees, and customers.

On January 1st 2008, the Clay Planet family became the new owners of this long standing and proud business. We intend to continue to bring forth new and exciting products, including new colors in lead-free low and mid fire glaze, and underglaze. In the future we hope to introduce, exciting brush-on raku glazes, and select dry glaze formulas to our distributors and customers nationwide.
